Tamron has come to WPPI 2018 with a couple of new zooms to show off: the 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD Lens and the in-development 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD Lens. The full-frame 70-200mm is going to be made available for Canon EF- and Nikon F-mount cameras, where it will provide excellent contrast and resolution in a compact package. On the other hand, the development of the 28-75mm shows off a brand-new avenue for Tamron to explore, full-frame mirrorless lenses, and in this case for the popular Sony E series.
To keep the size to a minimum, Tamron equipped the 70-200mm lens with a modest f/4 maximum aperture, resulting in an overall weight of 1.9 lb and a length of 6.8". The lens features an internal zoom mechanism, meaning that the length of the lens will not change during use. There are plenty of other benefits to Tamron’s 70-210mm, including a high-speed Dual MPU which allows for fast, accurate autofocus with the USD motor and smooth stabilization of up to four stops with built-in Vibration Compensation. It even boasts a best-in-class minimum focus distance of 3.1' with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.1. Additionally, this lens is compatible with Tamron’s teleconverters, the TAP-in Console, and a separately available Arca-type compatible tripod mount.
Mirrorless shooters will be happy to hear Tamron is also investing resources in exciting options for them, especially with the company’s first full-frame release being a versatile 28-75mm f/2.8. Beyond core specifications, this lens uses an RXD stepping motor autofocus system, which is exceptionally quiet for stills and video capture. It also has a close minimum focus distance of 7.5" at the wide setting and 15.3" at telephoto. Additionally, it has moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating to protect the lens from the weather.
