This week in the news: Happy Friday the 13th from the Gear Roundup! Last week saw some pretty big announcements in the photo world. If you were out on assignment and missed the splashes, click hereThis week, Gear Roundup sent a pair of roving reporters all the way to Japan to give us eyewitness coverage of this year’s CP Plus 2015 expo, in Yokohama. John Harris and Thomas Simms are reporting on the latest; see their reports here.

The Gear Roundup was thinking about taking up astrophotography and this clinches it! Digital photography has revolutionized how night sky/landscape photographers create their magic, and Nikon has given an obvious nod to the art with the release of the new D810A—a machine built especially for long-exposure, deep-sky images. The primary difference between the A version and the other D810s is a special filter that lets in H-alpha (656.28nm) wavelengths to better depict nebulae and other beautiful outer-space phenomena.

Are you ready to go “all-in?” B&H has an amazing assortment of astrophotography-ready telescopes, mounts, and tripods just waiting to be mated to your new D810A. Click here to start outfitting your own personal observatory!

Mark the Gear Roundup’s words here: the release of the D750 Filmmaker’s Kit, and the previously released D810 Filmmaker’s Kit, are watershed moments in the evolution of digital photography. Here we have a camera manufacturer bundling a DSLR camera with accessories designed especially for video production. Gear Roundup thinks this is a big deal.

The D750 Filmmaker’s kit comes with D750 DSLR, the AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED lens, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G lens, the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G lens, the ME-1 Stereo Microphone, the Atomos Ninja 2 Video Recorder, two EN-EL15 Lithium-Ion batteries, 58mm and 67mm Variable Neutral Density filters, and the HC-E1 HDMI cable. Awesome!

The COOLPIX S6900 is Nikon’s newest selfie machine, because many of today’s photographer’s favorite subjects are, apparently, themselves. To help you see the real you, the LCD monitor swivels forward, a shutter button has been placed at the front of the camera, and there is a remote shutter control that is activated by hand movement. You can get the S6900 in pro Black or look-at-me Pink.

The COOLPIX S3700 is a compact RedPink, or Silver camera, but has a 20MP sensor and 8x optical zoom lens.

Nikon’s flagship action/tough camera has been updated. The COOLPIX AW130 Digital Camera is water-, shock- and freeze proof. It is available in BlackBlue or Yellow, and is equipped with a 5x optical zoom with 24-125mm equivalency and a maximum aperture of f/2.8 at the wide-angle end for effective low-light capture. It can get you photos from 100' underwater and it can withstand drops from up to 7'. It is also operational in temperatures as low as 14°F—important for today in New York City or International Falls, MN, any day!
