WPPI 2019: Tamron Reveals 35-150mm, 35mm f/1.4, and 17-28mm Lenses

WPPI and CP+ are on their way, and Tamron is looking to get a jump on things with a development announcement of three lenses. Two are targeting full-frame DSLR users: a versatile 35-150mm f/2.8-4 Di VC OSD and a fast SP 35mm f/1.4 Di USD. The third lens is the 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless systems. Each lens is quite different from the other, but I'm sure they all will find a group of photographers who will enjoy them.

Labeled as a "portrait zoom" by Tamron, the distinct 35-150mm f/2.8-4 Di VC OSD for Canon EF and Nikon F does fill an interesting gap. One could argue it includes almost every portrait focal length you could ever want, including 85mm, 105mm, and 135mm, and gives you a little more use with the ability to go down to 35mm and out to 150mm for environmental or tighter framing, respectively. It's also relatively small and lightweight, likely helped by a variable f/2.8-4 maximum aperture. The lens can focus as close as 17.7" throughout the zoom range and has Low Dispersion and aspherical elements to correct various aberrations. Additionally, it uses an Optimized Silent Drive motor, and Dual MPU, for quiet and fast AF and effective Vibration Compensation image stabilization.

Next up is Tamron's latest high-end SP lens: the 35mm f/1.4 for Canon EF and Nikon F. The SP Series hits 40 years old this year and this 35mm embodies the best of it. A popular focal length, Tamron has taken care to show off exactly what it can do, promising to deliver outstanding resolution and beautiful bokeh. It's fast, including the USD autofocus system, and is extremely versatile due to its slightly wide-angle perspective.

Considering the popularity and reception of Tamron's 28-75mm announced a year ago, the last lens for today is most certainly going to grab people's attention: the 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD for Sony E. Users of the standard zoom looking for a wide-angle partner just found it. It's compact, proven by a 67mm front thread that matches the 28-75mm, has a fast f/2.8 aperture, and covers your standard wide-angle focal lengths. Add to this a minimum focus distance of 7.5" and an RXD autofocus system designed for stills and video and the 17-28mm makes a quite capable option for full-frame Sony mirrorless shooters.
