A few years ago (I won’t say how many), I bought a set of three studio monolights. They are big, heavy, plug into a wall, and come in a case that makes me look like I am a hockey goalie traveling for an away game. I spent a lot of money on these premium lights, and they still work great to this day. But, one trip to B&H’s Profoto display at this year’s WPPI and a few minutes with the Profoto B10 battery-powered light is making me wonder how much I can hock my old lights for on a local street corner.

Not much bigger than your premium 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom, a single Profoto B10 is designed for the location photographer who needs not only a powerful 250Ws strobe, but luminous continuous lighting for video, as well. You can mount the light on a stand, or just hold the thing in your hand—try that with the studio lights of yesteryear, if you can find a place to plug them in!
The interface on the rear B10 is sleek and simple—super intuitive—and, new from Profoto, you can control your B10 with a Profoto app on your smart device. You can also control it with your existing Profoto AirTTL remote, of course.
