Good things come in threes, and the most interesting of Panasonic’s fledgling S Series full-frame mirrorless system is the cinema-focused monster, just-announced Lumix S1H. The “H” references the hybrid nature of this camera, matching that of legendary GH series—which continues to have a huge presence in the cinema world today—and taking things to a new dimension. Blending the best of the GH Series, S Series, and VariCam line, the Lumix S1H is aiming to be the king of hybrid shooting with the ability to record 6K 3:2 footage using its entire full-frame image sensor along with an assortment of other class-leading specifications.
Being a full-frame system, the Lumix S1H maximizes its potential by offering a variety of high-resolution formats, up to 6K, at 24p using a 3:2 aspect ratio to capture the entire frame. It also offers a more conventional 16:9 format that is 5.9K at up to 30p. It will also be the world’s first full-frame mirrorless camera with DCI and UHD 4K recording at 60p in 10-bit. And, it can use other modes, such as a 4:3 Anamorphic Mode, to work in professional applications.
Another video-centric benefit of the Lumix S1H is that V-Log/V-Gamut will be built in, offering a wide dynamic range of more than 14 stops and matching that of the VariCam line. It will also work well with the GH5/GH5S V-Log recording options. It will even have unlimited recording, making it a reliable pick for professional video applications.
