Unveiled: A New Normal Lens, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM

Arguably the most versatile single focal length available, Canon has just introduced a new nifty fifty: the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. Pairing its classic design with a sleeker profile and new autofocus motor, this optic is ideal for everyday shooting for both still and video applications.

This full-frame-compatible, EF-mount lens utilizes Canon's gear-type stepping (STM) autofocus motor to achieve quick, smooth, and near-silent focusing performance, which pairs with the Movie Servo AF system found in select DSLRs for precise continuous focusing in live view. In addition to the focusing operation, the new lens also features a more svelte profile compared to its predecessors, and measures just 2.7 x 1.5". Additionally, the focusing ring has been relocated for more intuitive handling, the lens mount is now made of metal for increased durability, and it accepts 49mm filters.

The fast f/1.8 maximum aperture pairs with the normal focal length to make this an ideal lens for portraiture, as well as for working in low-light conditions. Seven rounded diaphragm blades also contribute to a pleasing quality of bokeh for selective-focus imagery. Furthermore, optimized lens coatings have been applied to control lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich and color-neutral photos and movies.

The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM includes the new E-49 Lens Cap, and is also compatible with the optional ES-68 Lens Hood and 49mm Protect Filter.
