Just when we thought life couldn’t get any better, we get word about the new Leica APO-Summicron-SL 28mm f/2 ASPH. Designed for use with Leica SL-series cameras, as well as other L-mount cameras, this new 28mm Summicron is a go-to wide-angle prime with a 75.4° angle of view that’s perfectly suitable for subjects ranging from street to architecture to landscape.
Two abbreviations that indicate the no-nonsense nature of this lens are “APO,” as in apochromatic, and “ASPH.,” as in aspherical. Accordingly, Leica’s newest wide-angle wonder from Wetzlar, which packs 13 elements in 10 groups, displays sharp edge-to-edge resolution and is highly corrected against chromatic and aspheric aberrations, as well as astigmatism. Essentially, this glass is as good as it gets and it should fit right in line with Leica’s other SL-series APO primes, including the 35mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 90mm variants.
Sporting a black anodized finish, this 28mm f/2 can be used in autofocus or manual-focus modes and its electronically controlled aperture can be set in full-, half-, or third-stop increments. The lens measures about 2.9 x 4", weighs 1.7 lb, and accepts E67 filters. Also, a screw-in lens hood is, as Leica’s spec sheet so wonderfully states, “included in the scope of delivery.”
