If you’ve ever been faced with stacks of Super 8 film reels in boxes, on shelves, in file cabinets, or stored in your attic, the idea of having all of it converted to digital video files is extremely appealing, especially if your projector no longer works as well as it used to. But, if you don’t have the enormous funds to have it handled by a professional lab, a great alternative is the reflecta Super 8 Scanner, with an automatic reel and CMOS image sensor that will digitize your film frame by frame, converting your hundreds of feet of footage into a high-quality 1920 x 1080p video.
This unit looks like a classic projector with its automatic reels, but instead of quickly running through the 18 or 24 fps film, the 24-bit scanner works diligently at a speed of 2 frames every 5 seconds. It will even take all of the individual scans and aggregate your footage into a video file up to 180 minutes long, which you can save to your computer in the AVI file format through the USB 2.0 connection.
Included with the reflecta Super 8 Scanner is the CyberView S8 software, with which you can make adjustments to create a more pleasing finish digital product. And, the unit is compatible with Windows XP with Service Pack 2, Vista, 7, and 8 (32/64-bit), but it is not Mac compatible. So, if you’ve been looking for a way to preserve your first childhood dive into the lake upstate or to create a library of all your saved archival footage, this unit certainly fills the bill.
