With a relatively new full-frame mirrorless system, Leica is making sure that it has all the bases covered with the official announcement of the APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm f/2.8-4 Lens, designed as a perfect complement to the existing Vario-Elmari-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. for a vast combined zoom range from wide angle to super telephoto. This lens is a part of Leica’s rebranded L mount series, more specifically, the full-frame SL line, meaning it is fully compatible with both the T (Typ 701) and SL (Typ 601). On APS-C cameras, it will have an equivalent zoom range of 135-420mm, giving it a longer effective reach for long-range imaging applications, such as sports and wildlife.

Being a telephoto zoom, Leica has taken care to ensure exceptional speed by implementing a dual internal focusing system that allows the lens to move two separate focusing elements simultaneously by using two individual stepping motors. The lens also features optical image stabilization that can compensate for up to 3.5 stops of camera shake, permitting use of slower shutter speeds in dim lighting or at long focal lengths. Optically, the lens is designed to resolve clear, sharp images anywhere in the zoom range by using seven anomalous partial dispersion elements in the 23-element, 17-group construction to ensure an absolute minimum in terms of chromatic aberration.
Zooming and focusing is all handled internally, meaning that the overall length of the lens does not change during use, allowing for a completely sealed system that is dust and moisture resistant. The outer elements benefit from the use of an AquaDura coating that repels moisture for easy cleaning. The lens also has a detachable tripod plate for attachment to a support system and has a locking, rotating tripod collar with detents every 90° for rapid movement from landscape to portrait orientation. Furthermore, the lens will come with a dedicated hood to prevent stray light and flare from compromising image quality, and the front filter thread measures 82mm.
