Ricoh Imaging has announced 34 new binoculars as part of a completely revamped Pentax Sport Optics Lineup. In order to more clearly define these new binoculars, they have created four different series to accommodate everyone, from enthusiasts looking for high quality at an attractive price point to serious travelers, birders, wildlife conservationists, and astronomy devotees.

The Z Series

These roof prism binoculars are designed to satisfy even the most exacting user. They feature pronounced eye relief, magnesium-alloy housing, and a grippy rubber-armored exterior. All elements are multi-layer coated and a specialized dust/water/grease-repellent coating has been applied to guard against the harshest environments. The BAK4 roof prisms have been phase coated for snappy contrast and maximum light transmission, and hybrid aspherical elements have been employed for precise and consistent edge-to-edge sharpness across the field of view—regardless of distance.

All binoculars in this line are both waterproof to 3' and nitrogen-filled for fogproofing and use in nearly any weather conditions, while the ZD ED models feature extra-low dispersion glass that helps to minimize optical aberrations in the field of view. This series includes the 8x43 ZD ED, 10x43 ZD ED, 10x50 ZD ED, 8x43 ZD WP, 10x43 ZD WP, and 10x50 ZD WP binoculars.

The S Series

The S series comprises both roof and porro prism optical designs. They all feature large objective lenses for detailed viewing under all light conditions, multi-layer lens coatings, and rigid body construction. The 9x42 SD WP, 8x42 SD WP, and 10x42 SD WP binoculars are the most capable, with complete waterproofing like the Z series, which is good to 3' deep, and they are nitrogen-filled for fogproofing. Also, they have phase-corrected roof prisms for clear, accurate viewing. The 8x40 SP WP, 10x50 SP WP, 12x50 SP WP, and 20x60 SP WP binoculars feature the same waterproofing technology but utilize porro prisms instead of roof prisms. In addition to these, standard, non-weatherproof 8x40 SP, 10x50 SP, 12x50 SP, and 16x50 SP binoculars are available that use porro prisms.

The A Series

The advanced A Series binoculars are distinguished by their light weight and compact size. They're available in both roof and porro prism design and have rigid fiber-reinforced polycarbonate housings. Multi-coated elements ensure crisp contrast and optimized light transmission. The entire A Series is waterproof, which means that they're nitrogen-filled and submersible to 3.3'.

This series includes the 9x32 AD WP, 9x28 AD WP, 8x36 AD WP, 10x36 AD WP, 8x25 AD WP, and 10x25 AD WP binoculars with phase-corrected BAK4 roof prisms and the 8x30 AP WP and 10x30 AP WP binoculars with BAK4 porro prisms.

The U Series

The compact porro prism U Series is easily recognized by its rubberized Uni-body design. All of the lens elements are multi-coated, and Pentax has employed aspheric elements to reduce the series' size and ensure edge-to-edge sharpness. Synchronized eyepiece design is used to maintain the correct interpupillary distance (IPD) when adjusting the width. It's worth noting the both Papilio II binoculars can focus down 1.65', making them ideal for those interested in botany or entomology.

This series includes the 6.5x21 PAPILIO II, the 8.5x21 PAPILIO II, the 8x21 UP in Black, Navy, and Pink, the 10x21 UP in Black, Navy, and Pink, the 8x25 UP, and the 10x25 UP binoculars, as well as the waterproof and nitrogen-filled 8x25 UP WP and 10x25 UP WP models. Additionally, the 8-16x21 UP binocular with zoom capabilities is available in Black, Brown, and Green.
